How to arrange a transfer from Lusaka airport

Compare pre-booked pickups, airport taxis, ride-hailing, buses and car rental for an arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.

For a first or after-dark arrival, arrange a pickup through your accommodation. If you prefer not to pre-book, the registered airport taxi rank is the clearest fallback. Ride-hailing can work when your app and mobile data are ready, but do not make the bus your main plan without confirming it locally.

Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) is 27km from Lusaka’s main business district, according to Zambia Airports Corporation Limited. Domestic flights use Terminal 1 and international flights use Terminal 2, as set out in Zambia Tourism’s airport guide. Give a driver or pickup service both the terminal and the exact destination rather than saying only “Lusaka.”

Choose a transfer

Pre-booked hotel or private pickup

This removes several decisions from the arrival hall and is the cautious choice after dark. UK travel advice recommends pre-arranging transport to avoid walking at night and using vehicles arranged by a hotel or tour operator. It also advises keeping vehicle doors locked and windows closed while travelling (FCDO Zambia safety advice).

Ask the hotel, host or operator to confirm:

  • the total price and currency;
  • whether you pay the driver or the accommodation;
  • the terminal and meeting point;
  • the driver’s name and phone number;
  • what happens if the flight is delayed; and
  • whether the vehicle has enough luggage space.

Send the flight number and arrival date, then reconfirm on the day of travel. If nobody appears, call the provider from inside the terminal before accepting any claimed replacement.

Registered airport taxi

ZACL says the taxi rank is immediately outside the terminal, airport taxis have an orange band and taxis at its international airports operate around the clock. Its undated transport page gives a fare to the city centre starting at K250 and publishes a list of registered KKIA operators (ZACL airport transport information).

Use K250 only as a reference, not a quote. The final fare may differ for another suburb, and the operator’s page does not say when the amount was last updated. Before loading your bags, show the driver the property name and map pin and agree on:

  1. the full fare in Zambian kwacha;
  2. the payment method; and
  3. whether waiting or parking charges are included.

Use the marked rank rather than responding to an unsolicited offer elsewhere.

Ride-hailing

Yango currently advertises ride-hailing in Lusaka, with the proposed price shown before booking and cash or card payment options (Yango Zambia). That confirms city service, but not that a driver will always be available at the airport when your flight lands.

Install and register the app before travelling. On arrival, enter the correct terminal and full destination, check the displayed fare and request only when you are ready to leave. Match the registration and driver details to the app. If you cannot establish a clear pickup point, return to the terminal and use the registered taxi rank instead of walking around the airport grounds.

Bus

Zambia Tourism mentions public transport on the Chelstone bus route, but its airport page supplies no timetable, terminal boarding point, fare or luggage rules. Those omissions make the service unsuitable as a tightly planned flight connection.

Use it only if your accommodation or an airport information desk confirms that it is operating, identifies the stop and explains any change needed for your destination. With luggage or after dark, arrange a direct vehicle instead.

Rental car

ZACL lists Avis and Europcar at the airport. Hiring can make sense when Lusaka is the start of a wider driving itinerary; it adds unnecessary administration if the immediate task is simply reaching a city hotel.

Before booking, check desk hours against the flight time, licence and deposit requirements, insurance, fuel policy and after-hours collection. The FCDO warns that road conditions and driving standards vary and advises against driving outside Zambia’s main towns after dark.

Name the actual Lusaka destination

“City centre” is neither a precise direction nor a reliable basis for pricing. Send the property’s full name, street address, suburb and map pin.

A quote to a hotel near EastPark Mall, Arcades Shopping Mall or Manda Hill on the Great East Road corridor should not be assumed to cover a destination in Rhodes Park, Longacres, Kabulonga or farther west or south. Ask for a destination-specific price.

Traffic, immigration and baggage collection make a fixed arrival time unreliable. If you have a meeting, an onward bus or a separately booked flight, ask the receiving hotel or operator for a current timing recommendation and leave a substantial margin.

Arrival checklist

Before flying

  • Save the accommodation address, suburb and map pin offline.
  • Save the hotel or driver’s number with Zambia’s +260 country code.
  • Screenshot the booking, meeting instructions and agreed price.
  • Confirm how you will pay and carry a backup payment method.
  • Send the flight number and correct terminal.

At KKIA

  • International arrivals should look for collection at Terminal 2; domestic arrivals should specify Terminal 1.
  • Match the driver, vehicle and registration to the booking or app.
  • For a rank taxi, look for the orange band and agree on the fare first.
  • Keep valuables with you and keep the vehicle locked in traffic.

If the original plan fails

  1. Call the accommodation or pre-booked operator.
  2. Use the registered taxi rank outside the terminal.
  3. Use an already functioning ride-hailing app if it shows an available driver and clear pickup point.
  4. Consider the bus only after airport staff confirm the current arrangements.

The practical choice is a named pickup for an unfamiliar or late arrival, the registered rank for a no-booking transfer, or ride-hailing when your phone is ready. Treat the bus as a service to verify on the day, not as the foundation of the arrival plan.
